Living with Intention: A Guide for Lawyers

By March 26, 2024No Comments6 min read

Living with Intention A Guide for Lawyers BannerLawyers are no strangers to high-stress environments and the constant juggling act between personal and professional life. It’s easy to fall into the trap of living trial by fire, reactively tackling cases as they come. However, there’s an alternative approach that can lead to not only greater career success but also a more satisfying, balanced life: living with intention.

✅  The Challenges of Living Trial by Fire

Working in a reactive mode, lawyers often face high-stress levels, exposing themselves to potential burnout and mental health issues. This reactive lifestyle tends to leave lawyers feeling like they’re constantly putting out fires rather than preventing them. The result? A lack of work-life balance can affect personal relationships and overall happiness.

But what if there was another way to practice law and live life?

✅  Benefits of Living with Intention

Living with intention doesn’t mean working less hard; it means working smarter. Lawyers who choose this path report an increased focus and productivity during work hours, leading to higher-quality work and potentially more favorable outcomes. Moreover, improved mental and physical well-being becomes attainable, and with these benefits, lawyers find an enhanced work-life integration that enriches both their personal and professional worlds.

✅  Strategies for Living with Intention

The journey towards intentional living starts with setting clear goals and priorities that guide decision-making. Effective time management techniques can help lawyers better structure their days, weeks, and months to align with their priorities. Additionally, the introduction of mindfulness and self-care practices ensure that physical and mental well-being are consistently addressed.

Success Stories and Examples

Real-life examples of lawyers who have transitioned from a trial-by-fire existence to one of intention are both inspiring and illuminating. They tell stories of how intentional living has resulted in not only wins within the courtroom but also in life satisfaction and well-being.

I have done several workshops with Lexlee and plan on doing more. The work I have done with her has given me insights and skills to grow in personal and professional ways. Her workshops are meticulously planned, ensuring meaningful group work, time for personal work, and time to recharge and relax. And let’s not forget the incredible people I have met, incredible locations, great food, and lots of fun. Give yourself a gift and get to one of Lexlee’s workshops!

My life has changed significantly in the last 4 years. I have gone from an unhappy alcoholic to a sober, thriving practice, and orchard in Hawaii, and a lot of credit goes to my time with Lexlee Overton — vision, self-care, mindfulness, self-love, and on and on. Commit to something that will actually help you find joy and happiness!

When I was introduced to Lexlee, my life was chaotic; I was managing, but I wasn’t living. I had not made time to enjoy the life I had built, honor myself with the gifts that come with personal success, or really even get to know myself at all. I was a very successful lawyer, a great friend and my own worst enemy.

In the short time I have worked with Lexlee, the changes have been phenomenal. I’ve made changes inside, where it counts the most.

For the first time in my life I feel loved, I feel at home, and I feel deserving of good things. Although most people cannot physically see the changes, those closest to me can feel them: the extra boisterous laugh, the twinkle of excitement in my eyes, the peacefulness I exhibit under extreme stress.”

Headshot of Laurie KhollerLEXLEE TAUGHT ME BALANCE SO I COULD BETTER MANAGE EVERYTHING.

There’s a lot of anxiety that comes with being a lawyer… and especially being a solo practitioner. I asked Lexlee to help me by being an objective eye to review the year past for my firm. She looked at the past financials, case load, marketing, and my own time allocations. It was really helpful to have someone else review things and give me insights into situations I wasn’t seeing for myself.  She gave me suggestions for how to spend my marketing time, case load and being selective about it, and how to balance my life so I could better manage everything.

That also came in handy when my anxiety would climb later in the year. Then, I could reach out to Lexlee who, due to the earlier work she had done, already knew my issues. With a one hour session, she could help me get back to a productive mode rather than letting the anxiety cycle get worse.  Quite frankly, I don’t know how solos do it without someone like Lexlee to help keep our sanity!”
