Balancing Act: Navigating the Dual Role of Managing a Firm and Practicing Law

By December 27, 2023February 27th, 2024No Comments7 min read

As a law firm owner, managing a successful firm while practicing law can feel like an impossible balancing act.

Juggling client demands, administrative tasks, and team management leaves little time for practicing law and growing your business. It’s frustrating and can hinder your firm’s growth potential.

Eventually, something has to give – some areas will lose momentum unless you learn to be intentional with your most powerful resource, energy, and focus.

At the end of the year is the time to gain clarity on how you want to create your next year.

1. Embrace and affirm your core focus.

This is the essence of your passion, purpose, and organization’s very existence. It transcends mere financial gains and stems from the depths of your heart, encompassing the why behind your every action. Your core focus becomes the guiding light for every decision you make. Does this align with your calling to practice law? Is this your path to greatness?

In his book “From Good to Great,” Jim Collins elucidates how and why companies transcend from being merely good to achieving greatness, emphasizing the pivotal role of leaders who grasp the significance of their purpose.

“When [what you are deeply passionate about, what you can be best in the world at, and what drives your economic engine] come together, not only does your work move toward greatness, but so does your life. For, in the end, it is impossible to have a great life unless it is a meaningful life. And it is very difficult to have a meaningful life without meaningful work.”

Be sure you know why your work is important to you, to your clients, to your team, and to the world.

2. Where do you want to be in 10 years?

It may seem like a stretch, but it is crucial to have a destination that ignites your passion for something greater.

Setting big goals is vital for reaching your peak performance because they provide motivation, focus, and energy. They elevate your standards, give meaning to your journey, and contribute to long-term growth. These goals provide a clear direction and purpose, empowering you to surpass your limits and achieve extraordinary results.

Chasing big goals requires tapping into your full potential and exerting maximum effort. When you set am

bitious goals, they naturally generate more energy and enthusiasm within you. This amplified energy fuels your determination and resilience, enabling you to conquer obstacles and bounce back from setbacks.

Imagine the magnitude of impact you aim to make. Whether it’s a quantitative goal like revenue or helping a specific number of people, or a qualitative goal such as becoming the epitome of excellence in your field, dare to dream big. Define the destination you envision yourself reaching in ten years with utmost specificity. This will pave the way for a roadmap that concretely outlines the necessary steps in the next three years while emphasizing the utmost significance of the coming year.

3. Define the next 365 days with intention.

Now that you know the purpose behind your law practice and its vision for the next decade, it’s time to set your sights on the most significant goals for the next 365 days. Reflect on how you can meet marketing, sales, financial, and team-related needs. Consider ways to optimize how you represent your clients. These questions will guide you and your team’s focus for the upcoming year.

Additionally, think about what needs to be accomplished in the first 90 days of the new year. Stay focused, don’t let distractions hinder your progress. Keep your intentions aligned with your core focus and your ambitious goal. Let every action you take be a step towards manifesting your vision.

4. Answer the most profound question: What do you need to pursue to practice law in a way that resonates with your deepest desires?

Only you possess the vision of how you genuinely wish this to manifest. Instead of approaching this inquiry with practicality and

societal expectations, delve into the realms of your heart and seek what truly brings you fulfillment. Would you like to encompass high-level leadership, mentorship, and direct client representation? Or is your path a combination, where you engage daily with clients and assist them in their legal journeys? Once you uncover this answer, envision how your surrounding team should be optimally crafted to align with your desired practice. Begin not with the questions of “how” or “when” but with the paramount question of “what would truly fulfill you.” If you can conceive it, you can construct it. But unless you permit yourself to embrace your heart’s yearnings, you may perpetually find yourself stifled, overwhelmed, and disheartened.

5. Surround yourself with the best individuals who share your vision.

Embrace the collaborative spirit that propels us towards grand achievements. Remember, it’s not just about hiring out of necessity but rather about selecting the perfect individuals to fill the right positions within your team.

One of the challenges in the recruitment process is often the failure to assess each role’s specific requirements adequately. Moreover, we overlook the behavioral traits that define prospective candidates—the characteristics that allow them to excel. In essence, it’s crucial to find that perfect match between a candidate’s behavior and the demands of their role.

Mind Over Law leverages scientifically validated assessments to make your recruiting process a breeze. By efficiently identifying the ideal candidate for the position, we save you valuable time, effort, and resources while

6. Tap into wisdom to take you to the next level.

In professional sports, it’s customary for athletes to be backed by a dynamic team of coaches wh

o specialize in different aspects of their game. From strength and conditioning gurus to technical skill masters, these experts play an instrumental role in propelling athletes towards their ultimate aspirations.

But here’s the exciting part: this concept transcends boundaries, encompassing success in every domain, be it personal growth or thriving in the business world.

At Mind Over Law, our leadership and team coaches are dedicated to empowering you and your team to achieve greatness. We believe that everyone is unique, and we understand that what works for one person may not work for another.

We embrace the fact that success is rarely a smooth journey. Like professional athletes, we know that setbacks and challenges are part of the process. However, we are here to help you navigate these hurdles and provide the tools and strategies to overcome them. We aim to help you build resilience, develop problem-solving skills, and maintain a positive mindset despite adversity.

We want you to understand that the practice of law isn’t meant to feel overwhelming and lonely. Instead, it can be a powerful platform to impact the world with intention, direction, and the support of the right people on your team.
